Plastic (aka acrylic) scrapers should be kept with a sharp edge. You should never press the plastic scraper into the ski base. You should lightly "wisk" the thick layer of ski wax off the base. Do not worry about trying to get a single, long wax shaving off of the base. A series of short, light, wisking motions are easier to control. Do not worry about a thin layer of wax remaining on the ski base and in the base structure. The brushing and polishing will safety and easily remove the final amount of excess ski wax covering the base.
If the plastic scraper is dull you will find you must press hard into the base to remove the execess wax. This pressing into the base will not benefit you. Wax will be pressed out of the base (warm and cold waxes). Wax removed from the base means a less than optimal wax job.
The easiest way to sharpen a plastic scraper while keeping the 90° edge is to use a flat, level surface, a square edge and sandpaper. The length of the sandpaper and square edge should twice the length of the plastic scraper. Have the sandpaper held tightly down on the flat, level surface. Place the square edge over the sandpaper. Hold the scraper against the square edge. this will keep the scraper at 90° to the sandpaper constantly. The edge to sharpen should be against the sandpaper. Now slide the scraper back and forth across the sandpaper while maintaining the scraper tightly against the square edge. Regularly shift the sandpaper as removed scraper material begins to clog it.
A metal scraper is a useful tool that must be treated with care. Using a metal scraper with too much force can result in too much ski base being removed or an unintended gouge. If you feel uncomfortable with using a metal scraper seek the tutoring of someone who has good experience.
Groove scrapers are specialized to remove ski wax from the different sized and shaped grooves found with the many different ski manufacturers. Groove scrapers are more rugged and sturdy than the plastic klister spreaders that some people use.
You will find that by rotating the groove scraper you will find a shape that matches your ski base groove. We use and recommend the Red Creek Groove Scraper. The durability makes it quick and easy to clean the groove. Most groove scrapers, including the one from Red Creek, have additional inlays for clearing the base edges of ski wax too.
